Thanks to Twitter @Survive_Cancer I came across this article on a walk-a-thon held annually in New Delhi. It was sponsored by "Can Support," a non-governmental organization (NGO).
I actually took a class in non-profit law in law school, which covered NGOs. NGOs are what the name implies, organizations that have no governmental connection. Representatives of government are typically excluded from involvement, though they may be funded by the government. What I found particularly disheartening was the fact that many of those diagnosed with Cancer in India who are underprivileged seek care when the cancer is at an advanced stage. All the NGOs and hospitals can do at that point is to make the last remaining days of the patient as painless as possible. The most common cancers in India are lung, stomach, prostrate, breast and cervical cancers. In India the primary concern is to allow patients to live and die with dignity. We should all strive for that.
