Ways to relieve Stress- the SPA.

THE FOLLOWING WAS SOMETHING I FELT URGED TO WRITE.  PLEASE TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT ANYTHING YOU DECIDE TO DO AND ABOVE ALL LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.  YOU KNOW BEST FOR YOU.
OK.  I have learned that we women have the right to pamper ourselves.  Actually the same is true for men.  Back east I felt that things like Spas and massages were something only accessible to the very well to do, or were silly. Plus the idea of being touched by someone else did not suit me.  I've done a 180 on that one.
I helped out at a walk-athon for cancer, and I came home with lots of material, including a pamphlet from a group that gives different types of spas in your home or office.  I thought I would write about my own experiences of the benefits of using relaxing services that can help relieve stress, which can benefit both those who do not have cancer and those that do. I am writing about my own experience and I can not vouch for whether you will like these or not.  You can also consider ways of doing these things in your own home to just give you time to breathe, detox, or just love yourself.  I am also cleaning house, and want to write different articles about the different resources I found there, including this one.  So this article is going to talk about Spas outside of your home, Spas you can bring to your home, and also resources I can find on Spa Treatments to do on your own.
SPAS AWAY
OK SPAS/ Salons outside of you home.  Here I have limited experience.  Seriously I used to get my hair cut by a woman at one of those inexpensive hair chains in Bethesda back east, and one time I went to a stylist to have my hair cut and styled for a law school dance.  Actually a woman I got hair removal services from there recommended me to him and he cut my hair. He had just made the papers.  I guess he cuts the first wives hair and other government figures.  He actually gave me a deal.  My hair ended up piled onto of my head in curls.  It was really nice.  I digress. If you can afford it, by all means find one.  There are tons around, and in some parts of the country I am sure they are cheaper than others.  You can get treatments from a basic facial, mini massage, hair cut.  Check and see .  Look around.  Sometimes you can find deals and coupons on line.  .

I am on the e-mail list of a Spa in my area and I've been going there for years for my hair and occasionally other services.  Talk to the stylists and beauticians.  Sometimes they have half facials or mini-facials or basic masks.  Of course I typically only get my hair cut like two times a year.  One of their experts also surprised me and told me about this place in Korea Town.  They know I am a cancer survivor and can't afford much, though they have mini facials at times in my price range.  For a low price,  I had access to their saunas and pools and they also offer SPA services.  This one was for women only.  In fact you must not be shy as you walk around naked in the SPA.  I have only been there once.  I am pinching pennies, though at my birthday last year I was so tempted to go.   Again, ask around.  Talk to friends.  You never know what you can find.  We women should look out for each other more and want each other to be pampered and beautiful.  Both Olympic and Being use natural ingredients.
SPAS AT THE DOOR.
I have never heard of having a SPA in your home.  But cosmetics are sold door to door, and sometimes the seller lets you try samples and pampers you.  This is the exact same thing.  I met a woman at the Walk for Cancer and she made me realize if I wanted to help other women, one way would be to share ways I found to deal.  Giving myself some sort of SPA treatment at home always made me feel refreshed.   She gave me a flier that lists the types of spas she has.

Basically though what they do is they come in and if you host you get discounts and specials for about 10-20 women. You must have a certain number to host a party.  It is a selling tool.  At the same time, it might be fun to try.  I am not a sales person.  I don't like to push, though I have a natural tendency to take charge.  I have not tried one, though I am tempted to get others to try it and invite me.  I just think it is a great idea.  Of course you could also just get a group of your friends together for a good makeover party.  I did that once a long time a go with girls I knew in High School.  We all went out for dinner in Little Italy in Baltimore, but before we met up at a friends and made each other up.

SPAS AT HOME.
Now to share my personal secret.  The best pampering I found was what I did for myself at home.  You can get all kinds of products to use.  I look for natural ones.  Beauty supply stores, your local healthy grocery store, or natural market may carry an assortment of products. You can find masks peels and Spa Treatments.  You don't need to spend a great deal either.   The prices range from $5 to $30.  Look for samples too so you can try them.   I use a variety of things.  My skin changes with the seasons even in California and different products have different benefits.  Do some homework on line to if you have specific issues.  A good clay mask is great, as are enzyme peels.  If you have access to a dermatologist ask if they know a good esthetician.  I went to one back east who gave me a rather inexpensive facial when I was having acne issues.  She recommended products her office actually made.  I live here now, but I remember that the products were a sulfur mask, a papaya peel and she used something with carrots and strawberries on my face. So I look around for products with those ingredients.  These home spas may also be good for in between pick ups if you do have regular facials done.  Though ask an expert.  I only know what my skin likes.  DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU THOUGH.  TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.  WHAT I USE MAY NOT BE GOOD FOR YOU.

You can research for information on line on home spas.  I found this great book that I've had for a long time so I don't know if they still publish it.  It is called "Mother Nature's Guide to Vibrant Beauty & Health" by  Myra Cameron and Theresa DiGeronimo.  I've had this book since way before I got cancer.  It basically goes over all these old natural ways people would take care of themselves.  It goes over how to make the most of your skin, tips from head to toe including eyes, diet exercise and stress management, and natural remedies including a section for how to deal with women only issues.  It even has a vitamin and mineral chart in the back that lists the health and beauty benefits of each.  I think I was on my way to knowing what I needed to do for myself.  I'll be honest and say I don't follow it like a bible.  I do use it for reference and I wish the chart in the back had what foods had what vitamins and minerals.  I do like that it has at home remedies for blackheads, natural remedies for discoloration of the skin, and ways to deal with all kinds of skin issues with natural ingredients both as food and as at home spa treatments and ways to increase the benefit of your bath.  It has solutions to a better tan, hair treatments, and a list of natural mouth washes.  Did you know you can take almond meal as a paste, and use it as a way to exfoliate the face.  It really is a cool book.

There are other books out there like this.  Look at Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble and your local organic store or Whole Foods.  They have all kinds of books on how to pamper you.  What you need to know is it is good to do this.  Take 30 minutes to an hour out of your day or week and lock yourself in the bathroom or bedroom and chill with a beauty treatment.  I've been a work-a-holic in my life, but after beating the cancer I have realized that it is OK to stop and breathe.  We need to in order to really live.

PLEASE DON"T TAKE THIS AS AN AD, AND IF YOU HAVE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE COMMENT.  SHARE THE LOVE.
